Ok so you can’t be mistaken in thinking I have an affinity for dogs … well it’s no secret – I DO!  As an only child, my poodle was my best friend, and before I had my first child my little Maltese Terrier was my ‘baby’ – Yes, I looove the cute & fluffy kind  =)

And so the story unfolds …

Our school has a wonderful concept in teaching relationship to the kids by having a buddy program.  It just so happens that the Reception class and the Year 7 class are buddy classes and my oldest & youngest are both in those respective classes.  This was exciting in light of the recent school excursion where I was able to kill two birds with one stone (that really is a horrible saying isn’t it … anyway I digress …) by going to an excursion for each child at the same time – Holla!

The Year 7′s accompanied their buddies in Reception to a local conservation park/beach where they spent the day, hunting for crabs in the rocky pools, swimming, eating, playing and of course learning to care for each other and understanding the beauty of relationships and their essence of life.

A fun and adventurous day was had by all but THE highlight of the day would have to be “Kenny”!

Kenny greeted our huge entourage of children & parents with such enthusiasm, energy & zest we were all wearing smiles that stretched from ear to ear and eyes that lit up like they were just loaded with dynamite as we watched with amazement at this ultra friendly & excitable friend we had just met.  He was such a delight.  You see Kenny, according to his dog tags, was a gorgeous little dog we instantly fell in love with.

We watched in awe and amazement as he played so gently, yet affectionately with the children and wait for it … a rock!  He was obviously a much cherised & cared for pet who lived on the beachfront or in the nearby caravan park who loved to play and interact and … chase balls.  Well there was no ball, but that didn’t stop him (I learnt alot from that tenacious little gem of a dog) he simply found himself a large shiny smooth pebble rock that glided around on the sand and proceeded to weave in and out of bodies and legs with all the grace of a gazelle and the speed of someone on a mission, all the while nuzzling this pebble along with his nose like a seasoned professional hockey player.

We all watched with delight and instantly were ready to each adopt this beloved little creature.   So can you imagine the children’s squeals of sheer delight when in digging a hole to build sand castles little Kenny jumped right and starting digging the hole with them.  He then without hesitation followed the children back to the grass area and joined us for a BBQ lunch.  Sadly we had to say goodbye at the end of the day but little Kenny will be forever etched in my memory and I’m sure in many of the children’s too.   Wow!  I learnt so much that day about life and all thanks to a generous, excitable and loving little dog .. thank you Kenny  =)
